Data Conversion : Many companies have large store of drawings piled in their engineering department from previous years. These are mainly from pre-CAD era paper drawing when the drafting had to be done manually on the drawing board. To avoid redrafting them, it is convenient to convert them into electronic format. This is achieved through scanning and vectorization to bring them into popular CAD programs as editable drawing files. For most companies this is a one-time project and doesn't warrant investment in hardware and software.
There are two possible type of conversion into electronic format. The first method is simple scanning to any suitable image format like 'jpeg' where the drawing is stored as a picture. The second method is to use digitizing scanners for conversion to the drawing format. This is more involved and time-consuming but the advantage is that it can be directly opened by CAD programs.
